What Is Stained Concrete?

Acid staining doesn't coat your concrete - it reacts with it. The Westcoat SC-36 Fast Stain penetrates into the slab and creates a natural, mottled color effect that looks completely different on every floor. No two stained concrete projects are identical, and that's the point.

The system is sealed with our water-based epoxy and finished with a water-based polyurethane topcoat for durability. It's one of the more natural-looking concrete coating systems available, and when done right, it can transform a plain slab into something that looks intentional and beautiful.

Surface Preparation Matters

Grinding is always recommended - it opens the concrete profile and produces the most durable bond
Acid wash + sanding with a buffer is an acceptable alternative, but only for light-traffic applications
The floor will be significantly more durable if ground - we always recommend grinding for commercial jobs or high-traffic areas

About the Stain

Westcoat SC-36 is a fast-acting acid stain mixed with acetone before application

Final color is influenced by the age, mix, and surface condition of your specific slab

Topcoat: River Coatings WB Polyurethane - 1-gal kit @ 300 ft²/gal, thinned 30% with water

We've been in the concrete coating business for 25 years. For most of that time, we used what was available - good products, but never exactly what we needed. This year, we finally decided to do something about it. We partnered with Westcoat to develop our own line of coatings, tweaked from the ground up to fit the way we actually work. River Coatings products aren't designed for a catalog - they're designed for the field, based on two and a half decades of learning what works and what doesn't. We didn't set out to be a product company. But here we are, and we're proud of what we put together.
